Dr. Gary C. Matlock is the Director of the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science in the National Ocean Service (NOS). He has served in that capacity since April 2000 where he has led the development of a coastal ocean research program that seeks to understand and forecast ecosystem condition as affected by climate change, extreme events, invasive species, pollution, and land and resource use. Prior to arriving at NOS, he was the Director of the Office of Sustainable Fisheries in the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
Dr. Matlock began his federal career with NMFS in 1992 as the Director of Field Operations in the Southwest Region where he served as the Acting Regional Director until becoming the Program Management officer for the NMFS in Silver Spring, Maryland. During his years’ tenure in these positions, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the agency, expanding his fisheries management experience domestically and internationally to the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. Prior to joining NMFS, Dr. Matlock spent his fisheries career with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) where he became the Director of Fisheries.
During his tenure with TPWD, he earned his Ph.D. in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences at Texas A&M University and conducted and published the results of research in over 100 papers on fisheries management, aquaculture, and environmental topics, including those involved with biology, sociology, and economics.
